We have an extra night or two after kardamyli on our way to Olympia. Are thinking of seeing Messini, Methoni, Nestor's Palace, etc. Also want to relax on some of the great beaches in the area, one starts with Vio.....(can't remember exact name). Like small Greek towns & modest pensions, etc., not too touristy. Which town would be better to stay in: Finikounda, Pilos, Methoni, or somewhere else?

Mary I don't know Finikounda, but I prefer Koroni to either Methoni or Pilos. The castle is better and it has a great beach as well as a more compact set of sea side tavernas. The main town is on the east side of the headline and on the west is Zaga beach which has a taverna and several sets of rooms and apartments to let. When I took the RS tour in 2006 we all fell in love with Gerolimenas, although it's the wrong direction from Kardamyli.
