Luggage on Ferries?

Just wondering - what does a person do with their luggage when they walk on a ferry? Are there lockers or some place you can check your suitcase or do you just have to keep it with you? Thanks!

There is a luggage storage area belowdecks near where you board the ferry, but keep your valuables with you just in case.

There are some storage shelves but depending on the ferry there can be a big chaotic pile as well.

Thanks. Is it just an open area where luggage is stacked? I imagine it could be a bit of a challenge trying to unbury your luggage when it's time to get off. Especially if there is more than one stop.

Another example of the ease of traveling lightly..we take our carry-ons with us up to the food and bar area and put them right at our feet, while enjoying some wine, beer and/or food while we are enroute. I saw lots of people leaving their "big" bags down with the cars (below decks) and they seemed secure, but I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Your option - you can leave the larger bags in the open area on the lower deck and keep the smaller ones with you or you can keep them all but it means you are going to have to drag them up several flights of stairs or possibly an escalator. The one protection that you have is that everyone is confined to the ferry so they can't really escape with your bag. That said, we kept ours with us.

We always just leave ours in the area provided (after removing valuables of course.)Although crime in Greece has increased over the last few years it is still, outside of a fairly small area of Athens, comparitively light.

I've never heard of anyone having anything stolen on a ferry, and the fact that all the Greeks leave their luggage as a matter of routine seems a reasonable indicator that it is safe.

Terry, have taken ferries dozens of times, always leave my big bag on the racks at the entry (car) level. What you worry about (bags getting buried) simply means -- act strategically. (1) Enter early if possible & put your bags on top shelf, or against wall further in (2) OR strategically STACK your party's bags high so no room to have others' bags on top. THen, as you near port, get up & wait at stairs/elevator whatever, so u are in forefront of departing crowd &allow yourself enough time to obtain bags. Just common sense, don't over-think these things!
