I have a long layover in Warsaw. About 15 hours. Does anyone know if it is easy to get from the main airport (Chopin, WAW) to the downtown area? Do they have buses, or a metro to take you from the airport into Warsaw? I'd like to see some of the main points of interest. But, it will be on a Sunday, so I'm thinking many things will be closed. Any help is much appreciated.
Yes, it is very easy. I believe it is bus 75 but check out Rick's book or other resources to confirm - it will take you at least to the main bus/train terminal and probably even into the old town. Cost is less than 2 euro if I remember correctly. A taxi last summer from the airport to the Hyatt was about 27 zloty. I'm assuming to the old town would be about 30-35. No metro from the airport. Definitely worth your while to go into town. Check out Rick's book or download the free in your pocket guidebook (inyourpocket.com)
It's bus #175 from the airport to Old Town and it's definitely worth the time to go. #1. Make sure you allow sufficient time to get back to the airport and clear security. The bus ride is fairly long but you'll have some idea of the traffic on the way in. #2. Make sure to visit the Royal Castle. Inexpensive and very impressive. #3. Print yourself a Google map of the Old Town area. You'll be able to mark off what you want to visit. Everying is fairly compact. Make sure you determine where to pick up the bus BACK to the airport ahead of time. Buses are about a $1 or so, cabs, as I recall, were about $25.
You didn't give your dates, but don't forget about the Euro Cup. Matches will be in Warsaw from 8 to 28 June, though not daily, of course. They'll bring extra crowds. Good luck.
Thank you all for your replies. I'll be there in July. I dread staying in the airport for 15 hours, so I'll give it a try.
