Lodging advice for Athens - early Oct 07?

My mom and I are heading to Athens in a few weeks and are looking for an economical place to stay for at least two nights. Any recommendations? (Plaka area, cheap, clean & safe - I've read some reviews of some of the cheaper places that seem to be in the shadier parts of town).

Christy, it's hard to say because everyone's definition of economical may be different. I just got back from Athens, we stayed at the Student and Traveler's Inn located in the Plaka/Monastiraki area. Its definitely budget, nothing fancy, but the location was great (pedestrian only street and about a 10min to Acropolis), it was clean and quiet. I was traveling with 3 sisters, we stayed in a semi-private room for 25 euros each/night. A friend of ours stayed in a private room for 65 euros/night - her room had a delightful terrace. You can find cheaper places in Omonia, but that area is not as nice/clean and becomes kind of seedy at night.

We stayed at Tempi Hotel in Monastraki, nice pedestrian street next to a flower market, about 5 min. walk to Plaka and 15 min. walk to Acropolis. 54-60 euro/night for double. Rooms were very nice, air conditioned, had CLEAN private bathroom. We had a balcony with a view of the Acropolis- beautiful at night. Highly recommended.

We just stayed at a really nice Holliday Inn near the Plaka area. Its on a street that starts with an "M" but don't ask how to spell it let alone say it. It was awesome. great breakfast too.
