Lodging (and more) for Kos Island, Greece

My family and I will be visiting Kos Island for several days in June 2011 and would welcome any suggestions for lodging, restaurants, and activities. I will be attending a conference at the Kos International Convention Centre (on the SE coast, not far from Kos City), so lodging near there is needed. Also, we are on a modest budget (so we can enjoy traveling elsewhere in Greece, too). We are two adults with two daughters (over 18). Thanks in advance!

I stayed at the Astron Hotel which is located right on the harbor and the price was very reasonable. Try to get a harborside room for the view. The hotel website is here: http://www.astron-hotel-kos.gr/ As far as activities, definitely travel over to Bodrum, Turkey for the day.

Thanks! The idea to go to Turkey is fantastic. I would not have thought of it (in spite of its close proximity). Is there a ferry?

Definitely plan at least a day trip to Nisyros, a volcanic island about an hour away from Kos. I've not been there yet (we're going in September) but I have heard many reports that it's a fascinating place. The island is tiny, and very non-touristy. The volcano is active (but not erupting) and you can walk right into the crater (with proper footwear -- not sandals).

The trip to Bodrum from Kos is very popular--with high speed hydrofoils, ferries, and boats to get you there and back. There are many travel agencies that can help with tickets or just walk along the harbor in the evenings and there are people standing outside their boats selling tickets for the next day. The hydrofoils get you there in a half hour or so and the others about an hour. Bodrum is a delight, a perfect place to spend a day in a different culture. The dollar is strong against the Turkish Lira now (1.5+ exchange rate) so lots of good shopping opportunities.
