Has anyone taken the local boats from Ammoudi, the port for Oia, to Fira? Do you know how often they run and how late in the day? Thanks
I took the bus. It is very simple to do. There are boats as well, but I'm not sure the schedule. Really, if you want to do that, I would just show up at the dock. It is a small port, so there should not be too many problems trying to find out what you want.
If you're thinking of an established water taxi sort of situation it doesn't exist. The only scheduled boat departing from Ammoudi goes across to Therassia 3 times/day. If you want to hire a private boat for a one-time trip to Fira that may be possible. Go to Tripadvisor.com. Find the Santorini Forum. Send "Fotinos" a private message. he has the name and phone number of someone who sometimes does this.
Thanks. I must have misunderstood the information in my travel guides. I thought there was a public boat. if not, we'll just take the bus back. The boat seemed like a good idea after a 3 hour hike and then the 300 steps down to the port, just to avoid climbing the 300 steps back up. Oh well.
Well, there is a small community bus/van that coordinates with the boat to Therassia, so if you're down at Ammoudi when it's time for the boat you can ride the van back up the hill. I don't know the exact times but it's somewhere around 8am, Noon and 4pm.
