Ljubljana to Dubrovnik...

As a part of a longer journey, I'll be traveling from Ljubljana to Dubrovnik next month and will spilt the the trip with a day in either Zadar or Split. Which would be a better place to visit for a day layover?

Hi Daniel,
Here's another option--we took a train from Ljubljana to Zagreb. Then took a tram to get a bus to the airport. We book an inexpensive flight on Croatia Airlines to Dubrovnik. It sounds more complicated than it actually is and Rick describes the details in his book. We left Ljubljana in the morning and were in Dubrovnik by late afternoon.

Here's another option. My wife and I took the train from Llubljana to Rijeka in Croatia. From there, we took an overnight ferry (www.jadrolinija.hr). Our experience on the boat was very pleasant, but I suppose it could depend upon the weather (although the route is mostly island-protected). We got off at Korcula (before Dubrovnik), but the ferry stopped at Split and Hvar. The route is quite spectacular, since the coastline is very mountainous.

I don't believe that the ferry travels every day, but it might be worth looking into the options.

Happy travels.

Have not been to Zadar, but Split was great. It would be a good place for a day layover, and it's easy to get from there to Dubrovnik by bus.

I drove that route (in reverse) many years ago, and I can say that it is a great trip with the potential for many stops along the route or nearby (I would go a little south of Dubrovnik to see Kotor before calling it quits). Split was amazing and I loved the villages along the way south of Split (stayed in Makarska overlooking the sea).
