I want to fly into Ljubiana and out of dubrovnic this sept.
any ideas on best way to get down to dubrovnik. we've 3 weeks in total. is ther one way rental cars? flights are too expensive. thanks!!
If I recall correctly, it is a short train ride to Zagreb (2 hrs) and also quite a scenic one as the rails run along the Sava river. From Zagreb, you should be able to get cheaper Croatian airlines tickets to DBV. You will also have bus options from ZAG.
There are one-way car rentals. The cost of picking up in Slovenia and dropping off in Croatia may be a problem. You could also use one rental in Slovenia and after returning it, take a quick train ride from Ljubliana to Zagreb, and pick up another car there. The roads are well-marked and travel through great scenery.
We did just what Arnold described--took the train from Ljubljana to Zagreb. Then took a tram from the train station to the bus station--caught a bus (Air Croatia bus) to the airport (Rick describes the route in detail in his Croatia and Slovenia book). From the airport we flew Air Croatia to Dubrovnik. The plane tickets weren't too expensive. We left Ljubljana in the morning and were in Dubrovnik by late afternoon.
We mostly drove from Lake Bled – Julian Alps - Karst Region - Rovinj - Plitvice Lakes – Trogir and dropped off the car in Split. Then we took a boat to Hvar and back to Split. Then we took a bus to Dubrovnik. You can see pictures and details at:
One way drop off fees range $200-400 in our research. There is a bus that goes once a day around 2PM ish I think.
They've really been cutting back the train and buss schedules as more Slovenians drive.
On the plus side, it's way easy to drive in.
If you want to have an adventure while you travel, check out going down to the coast, and taking a ferry to Croatia/Split Coast, then bussing over. Cost more, but is a nice adventure. (Just google Slovenia Ferries, they will come up.)
Hi Susie! There are one way car rentals. It will cost 250 Euros from one country to another for drop off fees, but I have checked many sights and rental cars in Croatia appear rather high. It was actually cheaper for us to rent in Ljubliana and drop off in Dubrovnik. Look up Kemwel.com I have looked many places and find them with the best rates and most reliable. Take a day and one overnight to stay in Mostar, Bosnia at the museum. You will have your own night at the museum! Right now flights are fairly cheap out of Dubrovnik. My daughter and myself will be flying into Dublin the 24th of June. Smiles and Happy Travels! Katy Smargiassi Auburn, WA
Katy:
I fly to Dublin from Seattle on Continental, but looks like I miss you by a day. I leave 6 am on the 25th.
