Lipizzaner horses in Lipica, Slovenia

We live in Northern Italy and I want to see the famous Lipizzaner horses. Any tips for driving to Slovenia and visiting the stud in Lipica (I've heard it is less $$ than going to Vienna)? We have three kids, 9, 7, and 4. Is this a good place for them to go (my 4 yo especially loves horses, just like her mama)? Is it doable in a day trip from where we are (closest major city is Pordenone, Italy) or should we consider an overnight stay? I'd love to hear from someone who has visited the stud.

I REALLY enjoyed my splurge stay (back when I was on a backpacker budget!) at Lipica. If I had more time and money, I would have stayed longer! I want to go back!

Your kids will enjoy it. The horses are gorgeous.

An overnight stay in Slovenia is worth it.

Here is the current price list.

We drove from Lake Bled to Piran last year and did a stop in Lipica on the way. It was really great. As I recall they had several shows in the morning and several in the afternoon. There is a large "casino" at the entrance so we purchased our tickets for the next performance which was a little over an hour away and went back to the casino and had lunch. The food there was quite good plus they had a very clean restroom- which was needed after the drive. There was also the option to go on a tour afterwards, which we did. If you were going to do this I would highly recommend that you stay overnight in Piran and also take in the Postojina Caves. We did that at the same time and it was excellent. Your children would love it. The two sights are close to each other but I think too much to try and do in one day with the ages of your children and the long drive.
