Last minute Athens questions!

We leave for our trip in 2 days and have a couple last minute questions.

First, we are planning to buy our ferry tickets from a travel agency when we get to Athens. We will be staying at Hotel Attolos near Monastiraki Square. Can anyone recommend a reliable one in or around this area please?

Second, we don't have a tour planned for the Acropolis but I'm starting to think maybe we should.. For those of you who have taken an acropolis tour, would you recommend it?

Thanks everyone! Your input has been so helpful and very much appreciated.

I guess I cannot name a specific travel agency, but there is rarely any difference between them if you are just buying ferry tickets. Just look for one that seems active and large enough and inquire about an english speaking agent. We did a self guided tour (info from books and the web) but near the entrance will be any number of sanctioned guides, haggle a little with them if you are interested in a tour.

You are staying in a very central location. Your hotel will probably be able to suggest a travel agency that is nearby.

We did our own tour following a written guide. That said, if a qualified guide were available without too much expense, I think I would consider it.

We arrived at mid-afternoon. Although it was approaching closing we went up for just a few minutes and then returned the next morning for a longer visit. The Acropolis is easily worth two visits.

Jenny-

When you first arrive you can pick up your ferry tickets at the Athens Airport and get it out of the way so you don't waste time in Athens. After you collect your bags go upstairs and find the travel desk of Amphitrion Holidays in the Main Hall between Exit/Entry doors 2&3. They will fix you up. Ticket prices are the same no matter where you buy them. When you're there you can ask for advice about Acropolis tours. Whether or not you need to join a tour would depend on the depth of your present knowledge and how much more you care to learn. Perhaps a good guidebook would suffice, and it would certainly be less-expensive.

We used Athen's Walking Tours or something near that. It started near Constitutional Sq and ended at the Acropolis. A live guide provides so much more information than a static walking tour.

Hi Jenny - From your hotel in Monastiraki it is a beautiful and relatively short walk up to The Acropolis - Through the Agora and upward til you get to the entrance - pay the small fee and go up the final steps to The Acropolis. Don't waste money on a "tour" You will be your best tourguide. Enjoy the sights , come on back down to La Plaka(again very close to your hotel) and have a great lunch or dinner>
