Is it worthwhile to bring a laptop on a 2 month trip through Eastern Europe? Or is it better to stop at internet cafes?
i really think it's a personal choice and it depends on where you're staying and why you're taking it. I just returned from a 6-week trip and i took my laptop. 8 of my 10 hotels had internet of some sort, I blogged the whole trip, posted pictures, skyped with my family, etc. For me it was totally worth it. if you just want to check your email once in a while don't bother. But I kept all my plans and everything for my trip on my laptop so having it with me was great. But it's up to you!
Debra...if you go into the "classic view" and use the searchbox in the top right corner, you'll find a couple of extensive discussions on this issue just in the past few days. I'm not sure whether eastern Europe would have quite the internet access that western Europe does.
wow - 2 months might well be worth it - unless youre backpacking the while time. If you have the possibility to keep it safe (or can carry it around all day) then maybe go for it. for 2 weeks - you can go without - but if you like to blog/email and do other work other than occational email then take it.
We didn't take the laptop this time on our 4 week trip to Central Europe (Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary). We were travelling light and didn't want the bother of safeguarding or packing the laptop everywhere we went. We were able to get online everyday if we wanted. Even very small towns on the islands in the Adriatic had at least one internet cafe. Some accommodations provided free internet (hotels and pensions).
My son did a three month trip to Eastern Europe and Morocco and was able to update his blog quite regularly from hostels or internet cafes.
I suppose it depends on what you want to use your laptop for. We found it wasn't worth the bother for what we needed.
