Kushadasi or Izmir to Rhodes Greece

After the Rick Steves tour of Turkey in Sep that ends in Kushadasi, I want to go to Rhodes but am wondering which is the best way over there. Planning to spend 2 days there and back to Istanbul. Any suggestions?

If you travel on a Saturday in September (until Sept. 25) you can catch a ferry from Kusadasi to Vathi/Samos, then from Karlovassi/Samos to Rhodes.

It's possible that more departures will be added before September. Luckily you have plenty of time to plan.

Another option would be a bus from Kusadasi to either Marmaris or Bodrum and then a ferry to Rhodes.

Thanks. I thought about the bus route but have no clue about the travel time. Don't want to use up a lot of time on the road. Would it be worth it to fly out of Izmir?

As far as I know you'd have to fly from Izmir back to Istanbul to pick up a flight to Marmaris or Bodrum, and then catch the ferry across to Rhodes. So either by bus or plane it's going to take a fair amount of time.

I believe that your quickest, most reliable route would be to take the bus from Kusadasi to Marmaris, approx. 4 hours. The Turkish buses I have ridden on were very nice and they are inexpensive. From Marmaris the "Flying Dolphin" hydrofoils cross to Rhodes in about 45 minutes. 2010 schedules are not out yet, but they usually run every day in September around 5pm for about 30 Euro one way, 46 Euro RT. Rhodes back to Marmaris leaves around 9 am. Check it out here: http://www.rhodes2marmaris.com/ Keep watching for the new season schedules & fares. I have taken the boat from Kusadasi to Samos and then the hydrofoils from there to Patmos, Kos, and Rhodes. This is a lot of fun if you have the extra time- I highly recommend this hotel in Rhodes: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g635613-d253993-Reviews-Spot_Hotel-Rhodes_Town_Rhodes_Dodecanese.html
To get to Istanbul from Marmaris it is a 13 hour bus ride. The nearest airports are Dalaman (90 km/54 miles), Bodrum (130 km) or Izmir (250 km). Transportation from Marmaris to Dalaman: http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/med/Dalaman/dalaman_airport.html Atlasjet, Pegasus, Turkish Airlines and others will get you cheaply to Istanbul in about an hour.

Rich's answer is excellent guidance: take a bus from Kusadasi to Marmaris and catch the ferry for the short voyage from there. This is among the most reliable Turkey-Greece ferry connections.

Certainly no need to go back to Istanbul!

You are right, best to go by bus to Marmaris. I am assuming there is bus service to the airport from Marmaris when we are ready to return to Istanbul. You have all been very helpful.

In my posting is this link to the airport transportation from Marmaris: http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/med/Dalaman/dalaman_airport.html --courtesy of Tom Brosnahan, who just posted on our thread here. You will enjoy Rhodes, there is lots to see and do. The old city is the largest inhabited medieval walled city in Europe. The people are a joy--I have made some good friends there through the years. Here's a direct link for the hotel that I recommended above: http://www.spothotelrhodes.gr/ This is a great place to stay, as evidenced by all the reviews on tripadvisor.com. Lee and his family will make your visit one to remember. I just checked Turkish Airlines website for a random day in September (22) and they fly 5 flights that day from Dalaman to Istanbul Ataturk for 104 Turkish Lira, approx. $69--this includes all taxes, etc. According to Tom's information, there will be a bus leaving Marmaris's Turkish Airline office for the airport 2.5 hours before each flight.
