Kosovo

I will be working in Pristina for 2 weeks in October and am looking for something to do or places to go over the weekend in between.

There's an old monastery in the nearby town of Gracinica. The town of Pec also is somewhat interesting. There's a ruined mountaintop fortress at Novo Brdo. In Pristina, I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but it sits right by the stadium (perhaps a local could direct you). But anyway, I had a delicious wood-oven cooked pizza there. Very different from the American version of pizza. They also serve excellent steak.

Skopje is probably a two hour drive away, but it's not a city I would voluntarily visit again.

Other than that... there isn't that much in Kosovo for the average casual traveler. It's an interesting place to explore, but it doesn't have many "sites" like we usually think of for European travel.

Go to your local library and see if you can lay your hands on either the Bradt guide to Kosovo or the latest LP version of the Western Balkans.

Depending on time and if you want to get out of Kosovo, you could see if you can make it down to Lake Ohrid in Macedonia or alternatively, head to Tirana/Kruja/Durres for something different.

Also, go to inyourpocket.com and download their free guides to Pristina, Prizren and Peja.

Lastly, try out Balkanology.com for other useful information.

This thought popped into my head last night- although the war in Kosovo ended over 10 years ago, there are still probably some active mine fields remaining in the country (the former Yugoslavia specialized in the manufacture of cheap, reliable mines... hence, millions were scattered throughout the wars of the 1990s). Your chances of accidently stumbling upon an undiscovered mine field are very low, especially in Pristina. But it would be wise to educate yourself on some the markers used to designate mine fields, as some of them are not inherently obvious.
