Korcula, Hvar in May

We will be doing Croatia and Slovenia in May, and are trying to decide whether it would be worth going through the trouble of trying to hit these islands. We are starting in Dubrovnik and planned on going to Korcula and/or Hvar, then to Split, where we will pick up a car for the rest of the trip. We checked the ferry/bus schedules in midMay, and because of the inconvenient transportation from the islands (e.g. leaving at 6am from Korcula to Hvar and Split)and our limited time, we wonder whether we would be better off spending more quality time in other must-see areas than spending extra time trying to make transportation connections to and from the islands.
We want to do it all, but are these truly must-sees?

ONly you can decide what's a "must". That said....we did this area in May 2012. Korcula was one of our favorite spots. We liked Korcula much more than Hvar, and in fact more than Split. Yes, the connections are more tricky off season. We took the (slow) morning ferry from Split to Hvar (to Hvar town via bus), arrived there late morning and had about 6 hours in Hvar which was plenty for us. We then caught the Krilo fast catamaran to Korcula, which got us there around 6 pm. That worked out perfectly. We had 2 nights and one full day in Korcula which was perfect. We then did a "transfer" to Dubrovnik (left Korcula at 7 am, got to Dubrovnik around 11 am or noonish). Some folks seem to love Hvar but we were underwhelmed. Same with Split. Still, I'm glad we visited each at least for a short while. It's all good.

David, Sure, a "must" is a personal thing. It's hard to say, however, without having seen either of these islands whether either is a must for us. We do have to rely on the input of others. It looks like we are leaning toward leaving them out of our itinerary despite our desire to see them. With our limited time it just seems like it would not be worth the hassle given the limited ferry service off peak season. We had similar problems with ferry service from Turkey through the Greek islands on s previous trip, causing us to waste two days that we could have used more effectively.
