Katakolon

We will be in Katakolon on a cruise stop. After doing some research the things I am interested in are the Chlemoutsi Castle, Mercouri Winer Estate, and Olympia. We are in port from 8-5. I don't think we could fit everything in. I would like to hear from someone who has been there about their ideas of which would be best. From looking at pictures online I am leaning towards the castle and wine estate, because the scenery looks beautiful, but I have heard a lot of people say that the ancient olympic site is not to be missed. Opinions please.

I don't know the other places you mention, but Praxitele's Hermes holding the infant Dionysus at the museum in Olympia alone would do it for me. The history of the site was almost overwhelming. But these things really float my boat. We have scenery in Ohio. :-)

I was there on a cruise ship and saw Olympia, it was fantastic. Keep in mind that Olympia is about 45-60 minutes drive from the port and you will need several hours to see it all, we hired a driver and car at the pier for 100 Euros round trip.

If you do Olympia you most likely will not have time for the other stops.

We also had lunch in Katakolon at a seaside cafe that was fantastic.

Enjoy your trip.

After doing some more research I think we will rent a car, go to Olympia in the morning and do the winery in the afternoon. I have been told the castle is difficult to find. Thank you for your help.

We visited on a cruise last year and if you get off the ship and walk to the end of the main street, you can catch a train for 2.50 Euros round trip to Olympia. The train takes about 45 minutes and then its about a 10 minute walk from the station in Olympia to the site.It would be a pity to miss such a site when there are other wineries and castles around the world.

Just answered a similar question re Mykanos/Delos. Go to cruisecritic.com bulletin boards and check the port, also sign up on the roll call for your cruise where you will meet people going on your ship - you may find someone willing to share your car.
