June/July in Greece

What is your experience of Greece in late June/early July? We are thinking of taking our 2 children (17 and 13) for 2 weeks starting the last week of June. We would spend time in Athens looking at archeological sites and then most likely the Peloponnese and then an island. Will we find Greece to be very crowded, hot and expensive at this time?

Yes, yes and yes but don't let that discourage you. Greece is fantastic. I will also say don't bother with an island unless you can spend at least 3 full days exploring, relaxing and enjoying what it has to offer.

waling the archeology sites is very intense labor in summer heat without cover. you may want to keep a plan b just to walk it a little in athens and then find a a nice island and enjoy the beach.

I would hope that you don't allow the prospect of heat & crowds to dissuade you from a wonderful adventure for your family. Greece is a fascinating place. But I agree with David, that it might be good to spend a majority of your time on the islands. Most (if not all) Greek islands have been inhabited for centuries and have many interesting archeological sites, with the added benefit of a nearby beach to cool off. Naxos is especially rich in medieval architecture. And from Naxos, you could take an excursion boat to the sacred island of Delos the birthplace of Artemis & Apollo, and a memorable place to see. And Naxos is just one of dozens of islands you could choose from. If you decide to visit Greece, there are many experts on this board who can help you refine your trip.

Thanks for the suggestions about spending more time on an island that may be a good way to break up archeological sightseeing. I want to see as much as possible but don't want to wear everyone out in the heat.

Andrea, As a previous reply mentioned, "Yes, Yes and Yes". However, if you're prepared to tolerte the weather, the crowds and expense shouldn't be a major concern. I travelled in Greece, the Pelopponese, Naxos and Santorini in June of last year, and it was definitely "warm" most days (expect to do laundry often!), but certainly nothing worse than a lot of summers at home. You might have a look at Matt Barrett's www.greecetravel.com as there's LOTS of great information there for planning trips to Greece. Another island you might consider for a short visit is Hydra, as it's not far from Athens. However, one tip for visiting ANY of the islands is don't drink the water - prepare to buy bottled water. Happy travels!

We travelled to Greece and Turkey for the whole month of July 2010 with our two teens (18 & 16). The weather was sunny and hot every day, ranging between 32 to 38 celsius, but after a few days we grew used to it. As long as you drink lots of water, you will be fine. As for crowds, yes there were a lot of people in Athens but we only stayed two days, which was enough to see the major sites. The rest of the time we were surprised at how few people there were. I would not be concerned at all in this regard. As much as possible, we looked for and found quad rooms, which helped keep costs down. All in all, we found the expenses to be reasonable. I also agree with those who have indicated that it is important to get away from the archeology sites. After awhile it can start to look the same and your kids will appreciate the chance to swim and snorkel on the islands. Having said that, I would highly recommend spending time climbing up to and exploring the Palamidi Fortress in Nafplion. It is a great venue for teens with imagination.
