Is it possible to just show up at Izmir airport and get on a flight to Istanbul? Mervin

I haven't done that but we did fly Atlas Jet from Izmir to Istanbul and booked in advance. I went to the Atlas Jet website as if I were booking a flight for today and there still appears to be space available and it's not too expensive. Onur Air, Pegasus, and Turkish Air all fly that route.

I just flew from Izmir to Istanbul two days ago and my flight was full with people waiting standby. I had a ticket booked 3 days before the flight and I would definitely recommend getting one ahead of time unless you're flying at a really off time.
