Izmir Providence

Any advice on how many days to set aside for seeing the ruins and sites in the Greater Izmir area? Also, I've read a lot about Fethiye and am intrigued. But don't have a lot of days left in Turkey before heading out to Greece? Would spending 2 days in Fethiye do it justice? Thanks.

I think you may be asking two questions here. Izmir seems to be your main question. Around Izmir, if you want to focus on ruins/historical sites, you could spend three days and see a lot. I'd suggest a day for the sites around Bergama, a day for the sites around Selcuk and a day to maybe pick up sites south of Selcuk (e.g. Priene) and for travel. If you only have a day or two, focus on the sites around and south of Selcuk as they are more intact. Fethiye is not very close to Izmir, but two days would allow for a good visit - maybe a day at historical sites and a day at the beach. Have fun.

If you're planning on going to Ephesus from Izmir, you'll need the better part of a day. It's worth it. Izmir city is also a fascinating place, the bazaar area is huge with lots of interesting cafes and shops. The waterfront is worth a wander, but I wouldn't bother with the shopping mall.
I know that's not really the heart of your question but I thought the extra information might help you plan. Whatever you decide, have a great time. I love Turkey.

Rob and Maggie....thanks! I appreciate your input. This site is so helpful. I'm letting go of Fethiye and reassessing time spent around greater Izmir. My husband and I do not like to rush, but don't want to linger too long either.
