Itinerary help - Sorrento, Italy to Dubrovnik

My husband & I will be traveling from Sorrento to Dubrovnik next June.I think there is a overnight ferry from Bari, Italy to Dubrovnik but I can't find a schedule for June, 2013 and does it run every day? Also what would be the best way to get from Sorrento to Bari? I would like to fly direct to Dubrovnik from Naples but I can't find a flight that makes any sense (12 hour layovers, etc,) or very expensive. Does anyone know about buses? Any advice would be very appreciated. Barb

I'm planning on taking the Bari-Dubrovnik ferry in June as well. After some research, it seems that the schedule is periodically d, but right now, there is one ferry line that leaves daily during the summer, departing Bari at 2200 and arriving in Dubrovnik at 700. Cost for a cabin for two is about 230 euro. (I googled "Ferry Bari Dubrovnik"). From Sorrento to Bari, the easiest trip would be to go back to Napoli Centrale (take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to the train station in Naples) and take the train to Bari.

A few years ago, we took the train from Sorrento to Rome, flew Rome>Split for about $100 euros each (1 hour flight), stayed overnight in Split in Base Rooms inside Diocletian's Palace, then took the bus down to Dubrovnik. Not sure if that Rome>Split flight is still available, but it was a great option for us.

Thanks to both of you. I have been trying to find a flight but will probably go with the ferry. I went on the Jadrolinja web site but could not find a schedule for next year yet. Is it better to get tickets yourself or thru a travel agent?

You will probably have to wait a bit to purchase tickets online. You have the correct site, but schedules change seasonally. Check again after the first of the year.

Thanks Zoe. I suppose that you have taken this trip? Did you go to Mostar or Bay of Kotor? We are thinking of doing those as day trips from Dubrovnik. Is that reasonable? Barb

I am planning to do this trip in June, I haven't done it yet, but I have spent some time researching options. I've done the Napoli-Bari trip lots of times. Try googling images of the places you mention, it can be inspiring and help keep you excited.

Kotor is reasonable as a day trip from Dubrovnik if you rent a car, by bus, maybe less so. Another town to fly from Italy to is Zadar, Croatia. It's 7 hours by bus to Dubvornik, but nice scenery on the ride and you could split it up with a stay in Split, which I found enchanting.

Thanks loads to Zoe and Sarah. It is part of the fun trying to figure these things. Do you know when I might expect to find ferry schedules on line?

I went from Sorrento to Dubrovnik a couple of years ago. After reviewing various options, I decided on the following: midday Circumvesuviana to Naples, regional train to Caserta where I connected to around a 3:00pm high-speed train to Bari. My train arrived in Bari about 6:00pm and I took a city bus to the pier, allowing ample time to pick up my reserved ticket before the 8:00pm deadline (2 hours before 10:00pm overnight sailing). I used a Jadrolinia ferry and purchased my ticket online through their agent in Bari. Use www.jadrolinija.hr as your resource. There you'll find customer service links to Jadrolinija and their Bari agent. Summer schedules aren't posted until around April 1, but both companies have english-speaking agents that are very helpful and can answer your specific questions about booking. I would suggest a cabin with shower (VERY basic shower), as it costs not much more than the cabin without and you may not be able to access your room in Dubrovnik until several hours after the 7:00am ferry arrival. I would also suggest you purchase your high-speed train ticket before reaching Sorrento (either online for economy fares or at a train station), as the travel agents in Sorrento all charge a fee to issue train tickets (something like 15%-20%). You can buy the Naples-Caserta ticket in advance or at the Naples train station.
