Itinerary help needed--so. Poland, Slovakia

After 6 days in Krakow we're thinking of renting a car for 11 days. So far not much information found on small towns, great scenery, mild hikes (we're seniors), churches, etc. Do we need to make lodging reservations or will we be able to easily find B&Bs (zimmer-like places)? Thanks for any help.

From Krakow, you could spend a couple days in Zakopane in the Tatra mountains. The town is nice but very touristy. We hiked for 2 days and it was nice. I believe there is a funicular you can ride up one one mountain as well. Stayed here http://www.bambizakopane.pl/en/. It was a great room at a reasonable price. I would book ahead for Zakopane as it is popular with Poles.

Margaret, we've had a couple of enjoyable trips into Slovakia. Look for the banska towns for Slovakian culture and the towns of the High Tatras for nature. If you like castles look for Bojnice, Spis and Orava. Kosice is also reportedly very interesting but I haven't been there yet. I enjoyed the Slovak. people and the best thing about Slovakia if you are coming from Poland is that it is on the way to Budapest!

There are a lot of wooden churches in Southern Poland and Slovakia that are best reached by car. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1053/ http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1273 http://www.visitslovakia.com/northeast-slovakia-1 If you wanted you could go over to some towns in SE Poland like Sanok, Rzeszow, Przemy?l, etc. I usually just type in google the name of the town or area and then .pl so like http://www.przemysl.pl/ will get you more info about the town from polish website. If you can get a hold of the Bradt Travel guide to Slovakia its really good, I also like this blog a lot for info: http://thegoulashtrain.blogspot.com/ specifically Slovakia (same blog): http://thegoulashtrain.blogspot.com/2010/02/slovakias-100-best-destinations-from.html

My husband and I, also seniors, spent a week last May visiting Slovakia by car. We used the very informative Bradt Travel Guide that Danni mentioned and also a Lonely Planet Guide to The Czech Republic and Slovakia. Our trip was mainly based on visiting UNESCO sights. We picked up a car in Kosice and then visited the wooden churches around the Bardejov area. From there we visited Levoca, Vlkolinec, Banska Stiavnica and ended our week in Poprad near the Tatras. In Poprad, we were met by a driver who drove us to Krakow. Our week in Slovakia was very interesting, but at times challenging. Even got stopped by the police who just said "Okay" and let us drive on when we could not communicate. We encountered no other Americans during our week. A very memorable visit.

Thanks for your input. We do plan to visit many of the UNESCO sites. Loved the blogspot goulashtrainso much helpful information! I spent hours going from one list to another, getting a satisfying itinerary.
