Italy to Slovenia

Hello We are a family of 4 who will be based in Trieste for 5 nights and am wondering ...after we land at Marco Polo airport Venice whether we should hire a car for 6 days or train it to Trieste and hire a car from Trieste for day trips to Slovenia. Have also heard that we need to be careful about insurance etc. when driving into slovenia. We are travelling in January so weather conditions could be interesting. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

In January, unless you plan on only visiting the coastal regions of Slovenia, I would strongly advise against hiring a car in Italy. Italian rentals will most likely come equipped with summer tyres, not winter tyres, which are essential at that time of year. If possible hire your car in Slovenia, where winter tyres are mandatory during the colder months, meaning rentals have them, too. That way your car will also already come with the toll sticker required for driving on the motorways in Slovenia, saving you a few euros.

Thanks Dejan Does that mean we could also hire car in Slovenia (say Ljubljana...and take it into Italy (where our base is for 5 nights). Thanks

Wow! Warnings about Slovenia. We were there last summer, and it is totally safe. I have no idea where such rumors arise. Albania, Serbia, maybe caution is advised. Slovenia was the first FRY state to get out, and has been like its neighbors Italy, Austria, and Hungary since then. Great place.

No warnings about Slovenia, but warnings about Italian rentals instead. Snow is a very possible occurence in January in this part of Europe and I wouldn't want anyone risk being stuck on the road because of improper equipment.
