Istanbul Accommodations - Apartments

We are planning a trip to Istanbul later this year and are wondering about renting an apartment. My husband and I will be travelling with our 21 year old son. We have rented apartments on other trips to Europe (France, UK, Italy) and have enjoyed the freedom and space an apartment gives over a hotel. We want to spend 5 or 6 days in Istanbul. I have had some people tell me I would probably fee more comfortable in a hotel setting in Istanbul over an apartment. We have never been to this part of the world before and would appreciate some feed back on the subject.
thank you

I had a great time renting a spacious apartment called Sultanahmet Suites (I booked through Booking.com and used cash to get the best rate - it was $46 Euros per night in 2011 - ridiculously good value for the space, including a little kitchenette and fridge to store fresh food from the market. I traveled alone as a single female for 2 weeks and did not experience any problems and would do it again without hesitation - however, you need to be more flexible than with a hotel and be open to living in a local neighborhood (which is 5 min away from everything you'll want to see by walking)

Thanks Alexandria that's one of the things I love about renting apartments - the local neighbourhoods. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable. If you didn't have any problems traveling as a single female then I am sure that we will be comfortable as a family. Did you like the Sultanahmet neighbourhood? thanks for taking the time to answer
