I am traveling to Istanbul on July 8th with my family. I would love any insight/feedback from people who have traveled there recently, since the protests began, in regards to what its like. We are staying in the old town.

Hi,
Old town...no sweat. The vast majority of protests are in what they might call, new town across the Bosphorus ( a big estuary) from Sultanahmet (old town). wayne iNWI

You should be fine in the old town. I'm getting that from friends who live there. Enjoy your trip, Istanbul is amazing.

Thanks All- We have arrived, and feel quite safe. There is some tension and protests in Taskim square. There is some police presence in the Hipoodrome area with a Ramadan festival starting up tonight. But I don;t feel any threat.
Its a wonderful city and we are enjoying it!
