Looking for tips on guide books for travel to Israel on your own - since Rick doesn't have one.
Lonely Planet or Frommers
A friend of mine has written a non-commercial guide, based on his many trips here. Most people who have used it have found it to be excellent. If you PM me your email address, I'll be happy to zip it off to you in pdf format, complete with color photos. It's free. It's a good start for anyone planning to come here independently.

First, you need to find out which areas to avoid and which safe transportation to use. You will enjoy Israel. The food and people are great.
All the areas generally traveled to by tourists are safe, and all modes of transportation are safe as regards deliberate acts, though I wouldn't recommend riding a bicycle in the cities - drivers, you know.
To the recent post: We felt Israel was much safer than, say, Prague or Italy. We rented a car, went all over the country.
