Looking for an island vacation within our vacation. Hoping to stop here on our ferry trip from Split to Dubrovnik. Prefer small town with good ferry connections; suggestions?

Hvar and Korcula are the two main islands between Split and Dubrovnik. Does your ferry stop at either island? If so, it would make sense to stay there. If not, Korcula is a short distance from Dubrovnik. You can access it via bus or ferry. If you want to get off the beaten path a bit, you could take a ferry from Split to the island of Vis, stay there a couple of days, then return to Split and take your ferry (or a bus) to Dubrovnik. Vis is much smaller than either Hvar or Korcula, has a big yacht harbor in the main town of Luka, and has a beautiful fishing village called Komiza with a "blue cave" just off shore. Komiza would be a great place to stay but you may need to spend your last night in Luka in order to catch the early-morning ferry to Split.
