Is it normal procedure for a hotel to have you deposit $ directly in bank?

We were excited to get reservations at the Marble House Hotel mentioned in the AThens book - but they insisted we deposit money directly into their bank account. The website says to send credit card information but they refused our reservation.

Yes, it's normal for a lot of hotels to require deposits sent by bank transfer. This is a way that they prevent last-minute no-shows and the hassle of disputes with credit card companies. Also, bank charges to merchants for credit card transactions have risen and it's possible they don't want to pay the high fees anymore.

Hi Donna,

Is this a cash only establishment? In several trips we have never had to make a deposit to a hotel bank account. Be careful here, check the reports of this hotel before sending money. The ones I find are less than great although some folks appreciate the low prices.

It can be really expensive to send a wire transfer to a foreign bank. Check the fees before you agree to this.

Perhaps you could find another hotel? We always stay at the Attalos Hotel, just down the street from the Monastriki metro station and close to the Plaka and the Market. They have a great roof-top bar with views of the Acropolis. And they accept credit cards for deposit. Not fancy, but clean and convenient.

We found another place to stay - I think the problem was we wanted 5 rooms. Maybet that was too much of a risk for them.
