IPhone in Turkey?

Will my iPhone work to make calls to USA in Turkey? Will I need to do anything specific to it before I leave to enable it to make calls. Will I be able to use Facebook to send messages?

Andrea, The short answer is "Yes", you should be able to make voice calls back to the U.S. Which cell network are you with? If your phone is on AT&T, I'd suggest checking with them regarding roaming plans. Those will reduce your calls somewhat, but it will still be a bit "pricey" to call the U.S. On the topic of accessing Facebook or other sites via the Internet, I would suggest looking into that VERY CAREFULLY. Data roaming charges can be ENORMOUS! Here's one recent example: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2011/03/03/bc-video-telus-bill-fight.html The original bill in that particular case was originally at $37,000.00, but the cell network "graciously" knocked $10K off the bill. That was for 2.5 weeks of international travel! If you want to travel with your iPhone, I'd suggest switching OFF the data roaming and accessing the net or Facebook ONLY when you have Wi-Fi available. You could also have a look at This Website as it provides one method of mobile data access, although it's not cheap. Happy travels!

I just returned and used my iphone (AT&T service) for phone calls and texting, however I disabled my email stuff because it cost too much. There is probably a way to send images via wifi without that charge, but I don't know that much about it. If you are Verizon, I don't know, but the outgoing texts were at a charge of about $10 for a month and that was for 50 texts. I also have some kind of international plan that lowered my phone rate a bit. Call or go to an office and they can help you.

ATT. Thank you. I am aware not to enable roaming. You have helped clarify some things re WiFi only for Internet usage. I will touch base with ATT in case I need to make a call, which I do not plan on doing. Would love to send period messages on FB via WiFi hotspots if this if free.
