Will you be in one of the larger cities? If so, you could probably hire a university student for a very reasonable fee. Ross in Denver

Hi, The "date" with the relatives may necessitate a translator. Have you asked if a family member speaks English? We were in Croatia for 10 days or so and never needed a translator. And we certainly don't speak Croatian. Unless you are in the smallest of hamlets, the people you will be dealing with speak enough English to make it fun. Remember that the signal for one is to hold up your thumb, not your index finger. Using your index finger will likely get you two of what you are desiring. When I run into a real language situation i have them write down the price or draw the direction. A small stash of 3x5 cards and a pen come in handy. We were in Ston which is pretty darned small and had great meals and conversations with the locals. I complemented a woman on her necklace and learned all about how she and her husband met. No translator needed. wayne iNWI
