international phone calls; airport security guidelines

my diabetic son will be traveling with a group in turkey for 2 weeks. i'm familiar with the TSA guidelines for travelers with medical conditions, but i'm wondering if airports abroad have specific guidelines for carrying meds, supplies, needles, etc.
also, what is the best plan for calling home from his cell phone or a landline phone.

Everywhere I've traveled the rules have been pretty much in line with TSA. Make sure your son has all his meds in original perscription bottles etc. Ask your pharmacy to package needles in perscription boxes (showing his name, Dr. name yada yada.) Have him take original perscriptions for his essential meds - in a pinch local hospitals can work with those. Landlines can be a crap shoot in Turkey. I use a cell phone but primarily for text messaging. Actual calls average o/a $1.25 a minute - yikes! Go to your cell phone carrier in person in order to unlock your son's phone (preferably 30 days in advance). Ask first if your carrier has coverage in Turkey. Verison didn't have coverage but Cingular did (last I checked).
