Can anyone recommend a good hotel in central Zagreb near to the historic sites that is reasonably priced? (under $100 for 2 incl. Taxes)
I stayed at the Hotel Central in Zagreb in 2001. I researched hotels and thought that it was the only reasonable place to stay. There were more expensive places that would have been wonderful. I would be a little nervous about going for the really cheap accommodations, given that I don't speak Croatian and have an aversion to bad bathrooms. Look at the website, do the math, figure out if it's within your budget. Zagreb is such a wonderful place; I wouldn't do it as a daytrip from Ljublijana.
I stayed at the other hotel who's website Kent listed - Hotel Jadran. It was decent, but a little tired. Good breakfast though. It's about a 10 minute walk from Jelacic Square. Both hotels will run about 700 kuna for a double - about $140 at the current 5 to 1 exchange rate. Short of a hostel, not sure there's anything decent for less near the historic center of Zagreb. If you decide to up your budget, consider Hotel Dubrovnik. Very nice and super location in the pedestrian zone.
