In Athens for 3 days

We will be in Athens for three days at the beginning of August and want to know what day trips are recommended to get us out of the city. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers.

When I visited in the dark ages of the 70's as a student no transport, I took day tours to Delphi and Mycenae. You can also easily get to Sunion. The trip I didn't get to make was to Euboea. My host was supposed to take me there and I think it's a place where Greeks go. I have never explored it further, but you might want to google it and see if it is interesting. I've always wondered what it would be like. Maybe I'll get there some day.

Delphi and Mycenae are good, you could also take the bus to Nafplio for the day, a nice seaside town. You could take the Ferry to some of the Saronic Gulf Islands or just take the train to the coast near Athens and the beaches.

Dorothy, more detail would help. R the 3 days just before or after some package tour/cruise? What days of week? If mid-week, a quick getaway is to take 40-minute ferry to Aegina, then 10-minute Taxi boat to Agistri.. sandy beaches, crowded on weekends, less so weekdays. Take latest-possible ferry back to Pireaus.
To/from Piraeus, take Metro.. fare is 1Euro.

I would go to a nearby travel agent and ask for a brochure of the tours. We did when we arrived and took a tour each day out to the important sights outside of town. You can walk to the ones in town.

There are 15 or 20 to choose from; so you can see the ones you are interested in. We had air conditioned busses (a Must) and easy to understand guides.
