Hvar Question

There are several daily ferries from Drvenik (on the coastal road from Dubrovnik to Split) to Sucuraj (on the island of Hvar). Are there buses that run from Sucuraj to Hvar town on any kind of regular basis? This appears to be an efficient way to get to Hvar town from Dubrovnik, but only if there's good bus service between the 2 towns on opposite ends of Hvar island.

Frank, my husband and I just returned from a trip to Croatia and were on Hvar. We rented a car in Dubrovnik and drove to Drvenik — detour on the coastal road added an hour to the drive — and took the car ferry to Sucaraj. I can't say for sure that there are no buses, but we didn't see any at the ferry stop nor on the drive to Hvar town. It's not the main ferry port, that would be Stari Grad, where I think buses are waiting whenever ferries dock.

I really wouldn't want to be on that road in a bus or with a bus. The scenery was beautiful, great drive, lavender growing every where, but the road was very curvy with many hairpin turns and guard rails at only really bad spots. No shoulders to speak of. And the drive took us an hour or hour and a half, so I just don't know if they have buses on that road.

You might consider going to Split and taking one of those ferries, which will dock in Stari Grad where you can catch a bus to Hvar town. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Mary. I suspected that might be the situation even though it looks like the shortest route on a map. I only have one night for Hvar and most of the fast ferries leave Split late afternoon, so I'm trying to find a way to get there earlier in the day. Since posting my question I found an 11:30 Jadrolinija catamaran from Split to Hvar, but that connection means I'd need to leave Dubrovnik on the 6:00 bus. That's early, even when I'm not on vacation.

So... I managed to find an old schedule from 2003 that says that there are buses...

If you can read Croatian... http://www.stari-grad-faros.hr/bus.htm

Pretty much, buses from Sucuraj for Stari Grad leave at 5:50 am and 2:30pm on MON & FRI. Also at 5:30pm on MON, WED, FRI. Considering that things rarely change on Hvar, schedule still might be valid. If you want to verify this, check this page and try calling...

Quite honestly, the best bet that you have is taking a ferry from Dubrovnik straight to the city of Hvar. This will save you so much trouble!

Jadrolinija ferry usually leaves Dubrovnik at 10am and gets into Stari Grad around 16:30. There might be one that actually goes straigth to the city of Hvar. Check out the Jadrolinija home page. Ferry trip is better... scenic!
As far as safety goes, buses are very safe to travel with in Croatia, despite the narrow roads on the island. But yes...don't drive if you are not familiar with the roads...
