I'm attempting to plan a week long trip to Hungary for a family reunion (30 People). Can you please provide any ideas, guide info, recommendations, hotels, sites, transportation, etc. Thank you in advance. The trip would take place in 2012.
Wow, thats ambitious!
Well, with only 1 week, I would base myself in Budapest the whole time, then allow different members of the family to do day trips when they want. Bratislava, Eger, Pecs, and even- and I acknowledge this is a stretch- Vienna could be visited on a very full day trip.
I had two full days of touring around Budapest last year, and did a day trip to Bratislava, and definitely needed more time. Four days for Budapest alone would allow you to see most of the major sights, and leave two days for day trips, assuming the 7th day you will fly out.
Speaking from experience of attending large (well, not as big as yours, there were only 12 of us on our family trip to Europe), it is best to allow freedom among the group, otherwise people see it as a burden rather than a fun trip.
Basically, stay in Budapest, use a central hotel, public transport and walking is great in the city. Cheap flights from the UK abound, so check into that. Specific sights depend on your group, however Castle Hill, the baths, City Park, Andrassy Avenue, the House of Terror, are a few "must do's."
Feel free to PM me for more information. I love Budapest and would be happy to help you out.
For a large group in Budapest, a wonderful outing can be a trip to a thermal bath in the city. There are lots to choose from...but decide whether you want the tourist catering types or ones that locals go to regularly.
Have a wonderful time there. There is a lot of culture to absorb in Hungary.
The very best of Budapest:
