April 2011 in BUD/VIE/PRG. Please recommend must-see excursions from each hub primarily by 1)subway then 2) short rail (0-2h). Will save countless research hours. Thank you!

Budapest has several great day trips by rail. Eger and Bratislava are both about 2.5 hours away, Szentendre is an easy trip on the commuter rail about 30 minutes and very nice for an afternoon and dinner. The Danube Bend is good with a car, but difficult without. Depending on your time and sightseeing priorities, I would go with Szentendre since you said that you want to stay under 2 hours.

In the range of 2 hours or less by train from Prague there are three gorgeous castles: Karlstejn, Krivoklat, Konopiste. Or you can visit medieval town of Kutna Hora. All mentioned destinations are well described by Rick Steves in his book Prague and the Czech Republic.
