I am trying to figure out the best way to get from San Antonio Texas to Ljubljana for the Adriatic tour next summer. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
It should be fairly easy to get to the main European capitals (Paris-CDG, Frankfurt-FRA, etc) from SAT either via DFW, IAH or the major hubs in ATL, ORD, etc. Once in FRA, etc. you will be able to get other flights into Ljubljana.
Check out Lufthansa, Adria Airways, Austrian as some of the airlines that will be able to get you to Ljubljana from the European capitals.
Also check out Orbitz, expedia, and the major booking websites here and then see whether it makes sense to get all the flights on 1 ticket or split it into 2 (i.e. SAT to Europe, and then Europe - Ljubljana)
Thanks! This at least gives me a starting place :)
My husband and I are going on the May 3rd tour. We plan on flying direct from IAH to Amsterdam and spending 2 nights (Continental direct flight), then Adria Air from Amsterdam. Each leg is a direct flight!
I flew into Frankfurt on Lufthansa and drove to Ljubljana in a few hours. You will want to take the train both ways from and to Fra.
The RR station is in the air terminal at Fra. When you arrive, just go downstairs and follow the signs. Buy your ticket to Lub there.
Jackie,
I've been scheming to try and get some time off work to also take the Adriatic tour in 2009. I haven't finished researching my flight options yet, but one route that I found is from London Gatwick to Ljubljana, via one of the Euro budget airlines. Using LGW is a good option for me, as there are frequent low cost (charter) flights to that airport.
Using Frankfurt (as suggested in the previous post) is also good, as charters fly there as well. Rather than driving or taking the train from FRA, my first choice is to try and find flights to Ljubljana.
Good luck!
I am doing the Eastern Europe so flying back Ljubljana to Seattle. So far Lufthansa through Frankfurt or NW through Amsterdam look the best for me. Air France also flies but has a tight connection in Paris. I have looked at taking the train to other places to fly from (Vienna, etc) but still think flying will be faster. I will be curious to see what you choose.
A good option is to fly into Munich or Vienna and take the train to Ljubljana. Keep in mind that the European budget airlines have very strict and not very generous baggage allowances. If I remember correctly, you'll have to pass customs and go back through security when you change planes/airlines, complicating layover times. Also, the Ljubjana airport is pretty far removed from the center; at least 30 min. by taxi or private shuttle. As a bonus, the train ride is really scenic.
