How to get from Split to Venice

I need recommendations on how best to get from Split, Croatia to Venice, IT by public transportation. If absolutely necessary, we can rent a car and drive part of the way, but I've heard that drop-off rates in a different country are outrageous, and our budget doesn't allow for that. Any ideas?

We took an overnight ferry from Split to Rijecka, then caught a very comfortable bus to Trieste (arriving late afternoon) and a train to Venice.

Since our reservations in Venice started the next day, we actually stayed overnight in Trieste and took an early morning train to Venice. But there were evening trains available.

Trieste, by the way, is a beautiful place for a rest stop. The bus station is adjacent to the train station, which is adjacent to the very picturesque port. There's a great piazza and some good restaurants and hotels, all within walking distance of the train.

The overnight Jardrolinija ferry goes through twice a week to Riejka on Thursdays and Sundays leaving Split at 8pm and is very cheap. Buses leave early, 6.45am daily from Opataja which is 10kms from Riejka (great place to stay for a night) to Trieste in Italy. Train Station is next door where trains leave frequently to Venice or better still take the bus to Piran on the Slovenian coast stay a night then get the catamaran one way to Venice, good luck, just did same trip but with 6 days in Piran
