I will be starting my trip in Athens then going to a few Greek islands, not sure yet which ones, maybe Santourinni, and Rhodes, but I want to end up in Ephesus then start my journey around Turkey, ending up in Istanbul since thats where I will fly out. Time of year is August.. Any suggestions?
Samos is the closest Greek island to Ephesus. In August you can get there by air on Olympic or Aegean Airlines from Athens, or from either Crete, Mykonos or Santorini by SkyExpress, or from Mykonos by Hellenic Seaways ferry. The bit about SkyExpress is contingent on them continuing on with their summer schedule as they have in the past. They're a small airline company.
It actually makes better sense to start your journey in Turkey in the south, say Bodrum or Marmaris, then make your way north stopping at Selcuk/Ephesus on your way to Istanbul. Otherwise you'll be going south after Ephesus and then backtracking to return north on the way to Istanbul. You can get to Rhodes from either Santorni or Crete.
I meant to say you can get to Rhodes from either Santorini or Crete by ferry as well as by air.
Totally agree with Lee...
we are going to Turkey and Greece in April/May
and after all our research, the itinerary he suggests makes the best sense of your time
and really do look into flying, we have been pleasantly surprised how inexpensive it has been and such a time saver
Thanks for all your suggestions. I've looked at your website of your coming trip and its fantastic. The reason for Greece first, is we're coming from Italy, and my sister will be traveling with us after in Greece since she has never been, then leaving to go home. She has already been to Turkey. So I'm trying to plan that itinery, going to Atyhens first then to a few islands, with the last island going to Ephesus then on.
