We only have 5days. We will fly from Rome to? An island,? then to Athens. We are thinking that we will only stay in Athens long enough to see the real tourist stuff. My question is what island to go to with such a short amount of time. We area a family of four (two teen boys).

Check budget airlines (Aegean) or Olympia first and see what are the most direct flights. Many will go through Athens anyway, but you want to get someplace without much travel. From there, take the options and see what interests you. Popular would be Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini. More laid back would be Paros, Rhodes, or Lesbos All would have beaches, some more hedonistic (topless or nude) than others, some have history, some spectacular views, all good food and wine. You only have enough time for one Island, if you can hit Athens early the morning the day before you fly out, it may be enough, otherwise allow two nights in Athens.

Thank you, I will find out the flight info. Which island have the nude beaches? I'm thinking we'll stay away from those with my teenage boys.

Lora, I believe the nude beaches are more prevalent on Mykonos, but it's probably safe to say they can be found on any of the islands. The most famous and "distinctive" of the Greek islands is Santorini (IMO), and that would be a good possibility as it has an airport. Just to clarify, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air arent "budget airlines" per se. Both do, however, put forth offers of discounted tickets. Just yesterday Olympic announced some great deals for both international and domestic flights for May and June. Also, on these two airlines all flights to the islands from other countries require a plane change in Athens. I second Santorini. It's the most beautiful and unique island in the Aegean. I don't think there's a beach in Greece where you won't see at least some topless sunbathing.

Another vote for Santorini. Check out Oia. Santorini can be an easy and direct flight from the Athens airport. Aegean air offers great value tickets. A good idea is to fly to Greece and then directly on to Santorini. Fly back to Athens and proceed into the city which is approx 10 miles away. The ferry can also be fun but with five days I would use air to save time.
