How close is the Cruise Ship Dock in Naples ti Circumvesuviana Station

We want to visit Herculaneum and Vesuvius on our own instead of with a cruise tour. Can this be done easily using public transportation? Also, what else would you recommend that we could see in Naples on our own witin one day?

We caught the tram -- think it is number one to the train station. Bus are also available to the train station. There is a little ticket booth right at the harbor. Also have the museum in Naples.
