Will be in Sarajevo for either 3 or 4 nights in September and am wondering if anyone from here has stayed there recently and if they can recommend any place in particular or any "must see/do things" If anyone used a local guide while there if they have any input as well that would be worth it's weight in gold! From Sarajevo we are planning on taking a bus to Dubrovnik with a stop in Mostar for a few hours then catch a later bus to Dubrovnik, do the bus/train stations have a left luggage facility? Anyone know? cheers
Unfortunately, I can't help with hotels but one thing I can suggest is the Sarajevo Brewery for a meal. Sadly, they don't give tours (and had a rather big, armed man stationed out front who informed us as such) but the brewery restaurant is huge and a beautiful room with good food. The location of the brewery will be found on any map the TI gives you.
Filed under "unsolicited but I'm going to say it anyway," I'd encourage you to consider spending the night in Mostar instead of giving it a couple of hours, even if that means 3 nights for Sarajevo and 1 night for Mostar.
Hope you have a great trip!
Was in Sarajevo last summer (Aug 2009) and stayed at the Holiday Inn since I had some points. The HI is a good 20-25 minutes from the center of town but about 3-5 from the bus/train station. Average hotel but no complaints since it was free.
For Sarajevo, your best bet is to look at a guide book to figure out what you want to do. I enjoyed just wandering all over the old town and walking up the hill to view the sunset. Cabs were relatively cheap. There is also a helpful TI office in the center of town.
Do a search for a thread about the Sarajevo-Mostar-Dubrovnik trip from a few months ago. My recommendation is to take the early morning train - to me it was more comfortable and a lot cheaper than the bus - though others preferred the bus. I don't remember about luggage storage in Mostar. The bus and train stations are next to each other in Mostar so if you take the morning train, you can book your bus ticket before heading into town. That way you know how much time you have in the town.
...one other thing: you might find the In Your Pocket Guides helpful with planning, particularly for Sarajevo.
