Can anyone recommend a hotel in Ljubljana? I will be staying there in late August for 2 nights. I am worried since Rick describes the city's accommodations as "abysmal!" Thank you in advance!
Lisa,
I haven't checked, but you might have a look at Trip Advisor or the appropriate Lonely Planet Guidebooks to see if you can find a Hotel that fits your preferences.
Depending on how "adventurous" you are, you might also consider a Hostel. H.I. has six properties in Ljubljana, with one being described as "simply the best location in the city" (there was no mention of breakfast at that location?). HI facilities are usually fairly consistent, and a double/twin room was priced at Eu$25 PP.
Just a thought......
My husband and I used Hotel Emonec. Located in the very center of Ljubljana, it was very convenient. Our room was of moderate size, clean, and everything seemed new. The desk clerks all spoke English and were helpful when we had some difficulties with our rental car reservation. The breakfast was very basic but edible. For other perspectives, I'd suggest reading hotel reviews at www.tripadvisor.com. Good luck.
Thanks for the great suggestions, everyone!
My wife and I stayed in Hotel Emonec and found it very nice. I room was ok, clean. The best part is the location. You are right by central square.
I would sugget booking ahead as they fill up fast and getting thier privtae parking, if you have a car.
We stayed at the Grand hotel which is very central and just a couple of minutes from the 3 bridges. Hotel was pretty good but make sure you get the room you book - we were put in a wing for the first night but got a better room (which we had actually booked) for the 2nd night.
In summer 2006, I stayed at Hotel Park (because other RS-recommended hotels were full). It was nice enough (maybe a little more than I wanted to pay), included breakfast and internet, and walkable from the train station and to the sights.
We have reservations for a B&B, Petra Varl for March. I will let you know how it is after we return. It cost 60 Euros/night, is rated #1 of the B&B's in Ljubljana on Tripadvisor.com, and is a 15 minute walk from the train station. You can read/see about it here: http://www.ljubljana.info/bed-and-breakfast/
Good luck!

I have visted Ljubljana three separate times and stayed in three very different accomodations. Each time was pleasant and affordable. The first time was in 2003, before we could find a Rick Steves guidebook. We stayed in Mercator Hotel (M-Hotel) http://www.m-hotel.si/ and had comfortable and clean rooms as well as a very nice restaurant. The downside is that this is much farther on foot from the center.
The second time we stayed at Hotel Emonec, recommended by Rick Steves. We stayed in two different rooms (we stayed in Ljubljana both before and after a trip to Bled) and had a pleasant experience in both. This was my favorite hotel of the three in Ljubljana.
Lastly, my husband and I stayed at Alibi Hostel on a study trip through Slovenia with my graduate program. It was noisier since it was a hostel, and we shared a bathroom with our floor, but it was clean and cheap and perfectly fine. Good luck, and enjoy your time in one of my favorite cities!
