my husband and I are taking our 12 yr old to England,France, Italy. Iam worried about the sleeping arrangements> We would like to only buy one hotel room. can we rent a cot? what are our options? I believe apt rentals are usually one week rentals.

We travelled with my sister a few years ago and had no problem getting triple rooms. Usually one double and one single. Hotels and B&Bs were able to provide them without a problem. Check the hotel websites for rates

I normally call the hotel and tell them exactly what you said here, "I need a room for my husband and I and our 12 year old." Let them suggest what they have to offer. When we bring kids we end up in lots of different configurations that I wouldn't have asked for but worked fine.
