My husband and I are going to Greece in April 2009 and prefer to not make hotel reservations until we arrive. Our destinations are Athens, Santorini, and Crete April 3-13. Could we get away with that? Or should we make reservations ahead of time? We prefer the "budget" options of accommodations.

You absolutely can get away with that, with in April the exception being Easter (Orthodox) weekend. I would research a list of possibilities, then either call before you board the plane or ferry, or call from the dock. You could also choose from the many room hawkers that will be at the dock. In April, tourist season will just be starting, so room availability will be good.

Take note that so far there is no ferry between Santorini and Crete scheduled for before April 10. To combine these two islands before then means an extra trip back to Athens by plane or ferry, then another plane or ferry to get to your next destination.
