It seems not long ago but I know it has to be about 10 years, since we went to Turkey. I think we paid US$40 a night for a double, breakfast included, but I see from the website it is a LOT more now. I think you could do a deal, especially if you plan to be there a month ! At that time the hotel was owned by an American woman but that may have changed. But I know it still has a good reputation. We were quite charmed by it. Have a wonderful month in Istanbul.

The Empress Zoe is beautiful and exotic, as well as safe & clean. The area is safe, too, and within walking distance of the Blue Mosque, Topkapi, etc. Check the website.

Recently stayed at Hotel Desserdat and found it to be a great boutique hotel. It is in an Ottoman style building; inviting lobby, good sized rooms and new baths. The wonderful breakfast is served on the rooftop (in or outside seating) with a view of the sea. As you plan to be there a month, it would be worth checking on the prices....we paid under $100/night with breakfast and free internet. The breakfast room is also a bar for evening drinks overlooking the Blue Mosque. They have a website and if you want my pics, let me know.

For a month long stay, I would recommend you rent an apartment on a short term basis. Most of the reasonable hotel options will run you anywhere from 50 to 120 dollars a day or more--you see how this can add up quickly! On top of that, a month in a small hotel room will get old in a hurry.

Most of the short term apartment rentals will be in the Beyoglu section of town. Google Istanbul apartments and you'll find lots of options. If you prefer to stay in Sultanahmet, you can contact some of the popular hotels there and enquire about apartment options. Some have a couple of apartments either within the hotel or nearby. My niece stayed at the Sari Konak apartment annex last fall and thought it was nice--you can use the lounge and rooftop breakfast area of the hotel if you want. I suspect other hotels may have similar possibilities. It would be worth checking around.
