Seems like there are very limited accommodations near the airport. Our flight will depart at 7:30 am, should we stay right by the airport or is it reasonable to be able to get out of Athens in a safe amount of time?
There is an Airport Express bus (X95) from alongside Syntagma Square, that departs every 20-30 minutes, 24/7/365. In the early hours it will only take 45 minutes to get to the airport. Buy your ticket from the driver for €3.2. Validate it inside the bus in the ticket machine. There is ample storage for your luggage inside. Check the websites for Peri's Hotel and the St. Thomas B&B. They're both quite affordable and are out near the airport. Peri's has a free shuttle but both will also help you arrange a taxi for those early-morning departures. http://www.stay-in-athens.com/services.htm http://www.perishotelapt.gr
Ricardo We've stayed in the Peris, which is near the airport. They run a shuttle or will organise a taxi. The hotel is fine and the people were really friendly and helpful. There's a nice little local taverna about 5 minutes walk away, but apart from that there isn't much around, unless you have a car. Overall though I'd probably opt for staying in Athens and catching the airport bus, or getting a taxi if funds allow. About 40 euros I would think. Cheers

I think the attitude is: why charge less when you can charge more? I know I would try to get as much money for my rooms as was possible if I were a hotelier.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Attica, and they have an early shuttle to the airport.
We haven't nailed down where we will be staying during our trip, we had wanted Hydra, but we're being tempted by a villa in Peloponnese. If we take the Peloponnese house, we will rent a car, in which case getting to the airport in the morning will not be an issue. That is assuming we can drop the car off at 5:30 am. Is it recommended that we arrive at the airport 2 hours before our flight? I like the idea of Peri's Hotel and the St. Thomas B&B. I already contacted them for info. The Holiday Inn is requiring two rooms for nearly $350. I just can't stomach that for a place to sleep for one night. We'll probably arrive late afternoon and leave by 5:00 am, we just need a bed. St. Thomas has a room for 4 for $218. I can't beleive there aren't more hotels around the airport. I think there's an opportunity to make a killing by opening a budget motel near the airport for people in this situation.
Ricardo,
There is a Sofitel right across from the airport we stayed at last summer. In the morning you just walk over to the terminal.
The Airport Sofitel is VERY expensive, but if you book in advance online they do offer some substantial discounts.
