Hotel in Istanbul?

Hello, We did the Rick Steves 17 day trip to Italy. Fantastic. Now, I am meeting a friend in Istanbul where our resident plans fell through. Any suggestions as to a hotel in Istanbul? Thank you.

We spent 7 nights at Hotel Sultan Hill near the Blue Mosque. A very comfortable hotel in a great location. It's also very reasonably priced!

We too stayed at the Hotel Sutton Hill in Istanbul in June of this year. I enjoyed the place, the staff, its location, and its prices. We got a discount after finding them in RS Istanbul Guide Book, mentioning that at reservation time, and asked to show it when we checked in. I would stay there again in a minute. Very good morning buffet breakfast downstairs in their dining room. We requested a room away from the road which we got but we did not observe enough traffic on that side road to cause much noise.

Thanks very much! Any advice on clothing, most memorable things to see or do, and food issue?

Diann, If you don't have a copy already, Rick's Istanbul book is really helpful for planning your time in Istanbul. You can dress as you would for any travels, just take or purchase a headscarf in Turkey to wear in the Mosques that you visit. Have a great time!

I also stayed at the Sultan Hill for seven nights in early September. The staff is very helpful and professional. Rooms are reasonably priced.

Another vote for the Sultan Hill! Food issues: I ate pretty well in Istanbul, basically my friend and I went to restaurants that looked interesting, even if the waiters couldn't speak English. We had to be careful to double-check the bill at the end of each meal though, some cafes and restaurants have a habit of adding small items that you didn't order, to your tab.

hi Diann, I just remembered a nice restaurant. It's in the Istanbul Modern - a private art museum with a more-than-decent collection of modern and contemporary Turkish and international art. The museum is in a converted warehouse right by the Bosphorus and there are great views over the water from the restaurant. Nearest tram stop is Tophane. Behind the Tophane tram stop, on the way to the museum, there's an area of nargile (water pipe) cafes - if you'd like to try that!
