We are looking for a hotel that is close to the Acropolis and other historic sites but is comfortable and clean with a little ambience or character. Not too expensive. Preferably not a high rise building. We were recommended to the Grand Bretagne but it is way too expensive. Thanks
Jennifer
Check the Pella Inn, Metropolis Hotel, Plaka Hotel and Attalos Hotel.
Thank you, I will try those. Have you stayed at any of those?

Jennifer, people can always help out better if you share 2 key facts (1) WHEN u are coming (rates differ a LOT according to Month) and (2) your maximum budget per night in Euros; here's a good conversion site http://www.xe.com/ucc/ Why? because "not too Expensive" for some = 150€ and for others it means €60. The more you share, the better the advice . I've stayed at Metropolis, ask for 4th 5th floor front balcony, about 70 May june.. website gives rates, shows views (great). Also stayed at Hotel PHaedra, same rates, great location, right near Lysikrates monument, if that's on your map; heart of Plaka district. Both have rooftop terraces, no bar, so u can bring up your own bottle of wine & picnic for the view.
AVA Hotel is also excellent.
I've stayed at the Attalos. They have a very nice rooftop lounge with a view of the Acropolis. This year I'll be staying at the Pella Inn.
Jennifer The Tempi might fit the bill. Be aware though that it doesn't have a lift! http://www.tempihotel.gr/ Also family run, and with a good view of the Acropolis, is the Phaedra Their website is not exactly informative but they do respond to e-mails http://www.hotelphaedra.com/ Failing those I agree with people who suggest the Attalos. We often stay there if we are only in Athens for the odd night. Have a great trip. Alan
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I am now working on it. I am hoping for something around $150 a night. It can be a little more if necessary.

Jennifer, You might have a look at the Acropolis Select Hotel in Athens. It's within walking distance to the Acropolis (although it's not a "short" walk). Happy travels!
Stayed at the Attalos in September. We asked for and received a room with a view of the Acropolis. The hotel was clean, reasonably priced (except the breakfast was too $$$) and we enjoyed the roof patio view while consuming our last bottle of Greek wine. Location good, about a 5 min walk to the metro station.
Thank you everybody. I have just booked the Plaka Hotel. I liked the look of Ava but they were totally booked and they might have been a bit expensive anyway. Does anyone know if there are stairs you can use in the Plaka Hotel? I read reviews on Trip Advisor which were all good except someone said about the one elevator being antiquated and very small. I am claustraphobic and might have a problem with that. I need some accessible stairs. We shall be there for 2 nights in May. Thanks
