We are looking for a hotel near the base of the rock formations in Meteora. Does anyone have any recommendations? Looking for something with some charm and a good view. Visiting the 2nd week of September.
Take a look in 'Lonely Planet' or 'Lets Go: Greece' both have an array of hotels from hostels to moderate price. Most travellers stay in Kalambaka, you can certainly see the rock formations from there since it is at the base of the region, but I do not recall that you can see monasteries, they are further back in the rocks. Not sure of your travel plans, but even though trains are not plentiful in Greece, there is a good line from Athens to Kalambaka.
We stayed here. It is at the base of the rock formations on the road to Meteora. I wouldn't say it is charming but it was fine for the one night we were there. You can walk to the main part of Kalambaka from there. http://www.hotelodysseon.gr/
We stayed at the Famissi Edem in Kalambaka. It's right on the main street in town and the rooms on the back side of the hotel look out onto the rocks of Meteora. We had a small balcony with table & chairs and could sit outside and view the rocks.
Not fancy but clean and decent food. Check out Trip Advisor for Kalambaka hotels and take a look at the reviews.
