Jack if you are referring to the Athens public bus #400 .... I took it in 2007 for research purposes (since it was my umpteenth trip to Athens), and because my travel pals were interested. I found that as a sight-seeing bus, it took a lot of time, and involved a lot of backtracking and sitting in traffic. If you look at the route map online (google Athens 400 bus), you will see what I mean. Athens is not laid out for these busses to work as well as they do in Paris or London where famous sights are scattered all around. the Major Athens sites are all bunched together, and often on no-car streets, so you can't get right up to them anyway, and for others u have to go on a heavy-traffic street to a site (i.e. Arch. Museum), and same street going back... all u see are store-fronts. Also, there is only a canned brief announcement of each stop, with nothing as you ride along. However, the flip side is -- it's CHEAP... 5€, and good for 24 hours... and you can use it as public transport for that time ... if you are alone, taking it to the Arch. museum from Plaka (instead of a taxi for one) more than pays for it right there! A fun thing to take is the "sunshine train" an open "tiny trolley" thingie that can go on those no-car streets... but take it after 6 pm to avoid the traffic.
