My fiance and I are thinking of honeymooning in Eastern Europe. We are looking to go somewhere where the dollar is still worth something. We're trying to find a little bit of luxury for not a lot of money. We'd like somewhere with a good mix of resort relaxation and interesting culture/activities. Any suggestions? Good websites maybe or a place to start?
I can't help you with "resort relaxation" or "luxury", but how about comfort for a reasonable price? Poland is probably one of the cheapest countries in the EU, for food, lodging and transportation. Krakow is a gem, and even Warsaw is a surprisingly enjoyable city.
Prague is no longer a budget destination, but it's still cheaper than its western neighbors.
Vilnius is a wonderful little baroque city that the tourist hordes have yet to invade and conquer (unlike Prague...)
When I last visited in 2001, Sofia was dirt-cheap and very enjoyable, although I understand prices have risen since then.
Although it requires a visa and lots of planning, food, transport and entertainment in Russia are still quite affordable, even St. Petersburg. However, lodging is expensive, but you can save money by arranging a homestay. I stayed in an apartment on the main boulevard for only about $40 per night. Send me a PM if you want to know more.
Eastern Europe for me would include Croatia and/or Slovenia where generally the prices are excellent, the people friendly and hospitable, and with some research you could find grand home stay(s) for your special trip. Gets a bit more expensive in Dubrovnik and Split but some great Dalmation coast spots besides those two are not to be beat. If you want to add a bit of spice I'd include a quick trip into Sarajevo (by scenic bus from the coast via Mostar) where the prices are cheap, it is safe, the night life and culture are incredible and you'll have memories not to be forgotten -as well as pics that'll not appear in too many other honeymooners' albums.
Surfing through the site found on the Graffiti Wall "Sightseeing in Croatia and Slovenia". If the destination catches your fancy, a good place to start and it covers a lot of the pros, the cons, the good, the bad, and the ugly (including Bosnia and Sarajevo).
I traveled to Croatia last summer and it was amazing. We stayed in apartments the entire time and averaged 60 euros a day for accomodations. The food was very inexpensive and the coast and Plitvice Lakes were beautiful. We started in Dubrovnik, went to Vis, Brac, Split, Plitvice Lakes, and finally Zagreb.
